First Reconciliation and First Eucharist

The sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist are received for the first time typically in second grade. Children are usually enrolled in our Faith Formation program on Wednesday nights and receive additional instruction at the special sessions in the fall and spring.

First Reconciliation

Preparation class for Reconciliation will be held in November (refer to calendar for dates.)

We use as our curriculum, Encounter with Christ from OSV. During class your child will delve a little deeper into what reconciliation is and HOW to receive the Sacrament of Reconciltion (Rite or steps)

Please help your child learn the Act of Contrition. At the time of their First Reconciliation a written copy will be available for them to read.

Act of Contrition

My God,
I am sorry for my sins with all my heart.
In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good,
I have sinned against you
whom I should love above all things.
I firmly intend, with your help,
to do penance, to sin no more,
and avoid whatever leads me to sin.
Our Savior Jesus Christ
suffered and died for us.
In his name, my God, have mercy.

First Eucharist

Preparation classes for First Eucharist are held in the spring (refer to calendar for dates).

We use as our curriculum, Encounter with Christ  from OSV.  During class we will focus on the parts of the Mass, especially the Liturgy of the Eucharist, where we will try to understand the REAL PRESENCE of Jesus. The First Eucharist class is involved in their own Mass. We will choose readers, gift bearers during class as well as learn how to line up for our big procession into church. We encourage you to attend weekly Mass to help your child learn how to participate in and become familiar with the Sunday Liturgy. Joining us in the Children's Liturgy is always WELCOME!

We also have a parent/child retreat and rehearsal on May 2, 9 am to noon.  We have 5 stations that you will rotate through as a family. It usually lasts about two hours. Then we will have a short snack break and continue onto rehearsal for First Eucharist.

First Eucharist Mass

The First Eucharist Mass will be celebrated this year on Sunday May 3 at the 9:30 Mass (Please refer to calendar for date). No flash pictures during Mass itself. Immediately following Mass, a reception will be held in Berg Hall for all.

What to wear

Girls - Traditionally girls have worn white dresses and a veil or flowers in their hair. Gloves may be worn but are to be removed while receiving the Blessed Sacrament.

Boys - Traditionally boys have worn button down, collared light colored shirts and dark dress slacks and dress shoes.

A reception for the First Communion class and family is held immediately following the ceremony in Berg Hall. All are welcome!
